In November of 2008, Al Mustin passed away.  We are all deeply saddened, yet challenged to carry forward Al's passion for helping people.  Al's memory is being honored through the new Success Connection Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to continue the tradition that he and his wife, Jan started with The Church of Today, "The Success Connection" and "The Power of Positive Living."  The Success Connection Foundation is dedicated to providing recognition to Austin's youth for outstanding leadership, character, scholarship and values.  Jan is currently assembling a board of directors for this philanthropic organization which will guide its projects highlighting the honoring of exceptional individuals of all ages in the community.  There will be the opportunity for the community to become involved very soon to furthering Al's mission by contributing to the Success Connection Scholarship Fund in Loving Memory of Dr. Al Mustin.

During a twenty-year broadcasting career, Al Mustin rose from radio announcer to television personality and finally to a National Sales Manager position with Times Mirror Television in Austin, Texas.  He founded a large and successful residential real estate company and established a thriving management consulting business with dozens of clients from among the Fortune 500 companies.

As he continued to overcome the challenges of serious visual impairment, he became more and more interested in mentoring people on how they could improve spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. One of the most powerful and transforming events of Al’s life has been his founding and leadership of The Church of Today, a dynamic and progressive inter-denominational church in 1982.  Al founded the Church of Today based on Christian principles and in the tradition of Norman Vincent Peale and Robert Schuler.

An inclusive and motivational center embracing positive thinking and positive living, the Church of Today sponsored The Success Connection bringing  motivational and inspirational presentations to Austin from international speakers and authors representing business leadership, health psychology, and other dynamic areas of personal development.  As its minister, Al's own personal challenges with the loss of his eyesight, his youngest daughter's struggle as a young child with cancer and his dedication to helping those committed to transforming their lives fired the passion of his teachings.

Having studied at the doctoral level with Dr. Douglas Baker of the Western Institute of Philosophy in England, Al blended metaphysics with traditional interpretations of the Bible and other great religious works and challenged others to think for themselves regarding their own personal beliefs about God and the meaning of their own lives.  Eschewing the stereotype of ministry, religion or church,

Al embraced a direct, often humorous communication style and blended music with his presentations as an integral, sometimes central element--with music being a universal language that touches the heart and helps it to open. Ahead of its time, The Church of Today brought Christianity to everyman and everywoman in a contemporary setting and reached out intentionally to the unchurched, many times awakening a new acceptance of a timeless message.

Al Mustin was the Director of the Church of Today Counseling Center as a pastoral counselor.  The Counseling Center brought compassionate, pastoral care to hundreds of individuals recovering from personal loss, spiritual crises and discouragement as well as addiction, on a pro bono basis.  The Church of Today also sponsored dozens of 12-Step Meetings, providing facilities for meetings of Alcoholics Anonymous, Al Anon, Adult Children of Dysfunctional Families, and Codependents Anonymous, to name a few.  The Church of Today also participated in Success Seminars at Sea, traveling throughout the world on cruises designed to incorporate personal and spiritual development with adventure and learning. The Church held regular Sunday and mid-weekly meetings until 1994.

Al Mustin has been the guest on hundreds of radio and television programs. He produced two regionally syndicated programs, “The Success Connection” and “The Power of Positive Living” and is an accomplished author for a variety of print media. “The Power of Positive Living” television series aired on cable television for over 12 years and featured guest speakers from throughout the country including local celebrities such as mayors, business owners, media personalities and inspirational speakers as well as internationally recognized guests such as Depak Chopra, Mark Victor Hansen, Og Mandino, Jack Boland and W. Clement Stone to name only a few.

In 1994, Al Mustin joined with his wife, Jan Ford Mustin, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist in founding Mustin & Associates and the Peak Performance Institute dedicated to empowering and enhancing the peak performance abilities resident in everyone.  Al Mustin served as Executive Director of the Peak Performance Institute and provided consulting, coaching and Pastoral Care services in Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston, with corporate headquarters in Austin.

Throughout Al's career of innovation and research, coaching and teaching in the fields of personal development and self-regulation he   has been a powerful force and creative leader in the applied sciences of Mind and Brain. He produced a series of brainwave entrainment programs designed to assist the client in moving into specific states of mind including Zero-Point Relaxation, Concentration, Sharp and Open Focus, Visioning, and the fabled “Zone” often referenced by elite athletes.  One of Al's most popular brainwave entrainment products is his Peak Performance Relaxation CD: A System of Brainwave Entrainment for Optimal Performance. A prolific speaker and writer, over the past few years Al was co-authoring several books and articles with his wife, Jan.  Among them is The Art and Science of Peak Performance, which Jan is currently editing for publication.

One of Al's favorite passions over his career was that of working with the football team of Lake Travis High School.  Head Coach Jeff Dicus approached Al in 2003 with a keen interest in the Peak Performance Institute and how it could help his team, the Lake Travis Cavaliers.  At that meeting with Coach Dicus, Al learned that the team had a record of 1 and 0.  Of 19 games in the past two years they had won only one game.  Al was so impressed with the intelligence, dedication and skills of Coach Dicus that he volunteered his time for several years and worked with the football players and coaches, teaching the art and science of peak performance.

One of Al's proudest accomplishments was donating $10,000 worth of Peak Performance Relaxation CDs to Lake Travis High School for the daily use of the athletes. It was most gratifying to Al to see the players win District Championship that year and each year following that and finally win State Championship for a 4-A high school in 2007, again in 2008, and in 2009 for a three-peat!  Beyond football trophies, these young players also excelled academically breaking records in their grade-point averages and moving forward to graduate in record numbers and attend the colleges and universities of their choice.

Al Mustin’s personal and executive coaching clients include nationally-ranked scholarship athletes, professional athletes, published authors, Grammy Award-winning musicians, and corporate CEOs. His client list includes executives from leading companies including Dell, IBM, Motorola, Tracor, and 3M.

Al Mustin’s keynote speaking appearances and seminars have motivated and entertained thousands of people throughout the United States and Canada, and he has shared the platform with some of America’s most prominent speakers including Dr. Mark Victor Hansen, Les Brown, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Og Mandino, Deepak Chopra and Dr. Norman Vincent Peale.
